The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to over 1,000 species of plants and more than 500 species of wildlife, 15 of them on the federal lists of Threatened or Endangered Species. It's administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System, federally funded and extremely well maintained.
